PETA Names Los Angeles 'City Of The Year'
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — PETA -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals -- has named Los Angeles "City of the Year."
The organization known for their sometimes controversial and always spirited defense of animals -- often involving human nudity and provocative images -- applauded the LA City Council for banning the retail sale of animals in pet stores as one leading reason behind the selection.
They also pointed out "meatless Mondays," and LA's considering a ban on circuses that make exotic animals perform tricks as other reasons.
The organization said selecting Los Angeles as their first-ever City of the Year was a pretty easy call.
In addition, they also selected actor/director Anjelica Huston as 2012's Person of the Year.
Huston was lauded by the group for spearheading an effort involving the nation's top ten advertising agencies and a pledge to not use chimps or other apes in their commercials. She also spoke out against the fur business and New York City's hansom cab industry.
"PETA could not ask for a more progressive home for our West Coast operations than Los Angeles or for a more steadfast ally than Anjelica Huston," says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. "From promoting meat-free meals and animal adoption to fighting industries that exploit animals for 'entertainment,' Los Angeles and Anjelica Huston have inspired countless people in Hollywood and beyond to make the world a better place for animals.
