Popular OC Lifeguard, 38, Dies After Falling Off Bike

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A popular lifeguard died Saturday after falling from his bike, according to officials.

The Orange County Coroner's office said Brian Gray, 38, was declared dead after being taken to Western Medical Center.

The website Corona Del Mar Today said Gray was one of the lifeguards hailed a hero after he helped rescue a 13-year-old Riverside boy in 2006 who had become buried in the sand.

Kelly Keyes, an investigator with the coroner's office said a cause of death has not been determined.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Gray was a part-time seasonal Newport Beach lifeguard part of the year. The Times also reported that Gray worked as a courier for the Newport Beach Fire Department.

Gray is survived by his parents, John and Mary Lou; his brother Robert, sister-in-law Claire, nieces Nya and Gorgie, and nephew James, The Times reported.
