Woman, Boy Dead After Pasadena Police Chase

PASADENA (CBSLA.com) — Two innocent bystanders are dead and three others injured following a police pursuit in Pasadena.

Officials said a brief chase ended with a crash at the intersection of Marengo Avenue and Maple Street, near the 210 Freeway Tuesday night.

The crash occurred about 8:15 p.m. near a perimeter where police were investigating an earlier fatal shooting on the 1900 block of Newport Avenue.

One person was killed in that shooting, another critically wounded.

In the fatal crash, a van -- carrying five people -- was broadsided by a speeding SUV, Pasadena police said.

A 26-year-old woman and 11-year-old boy were killed in the collision, Chief Daryll Qualls said. Their identities have not been released.

Three others were also injured and had to be extricated out of the vehicle. They were transported to a local hospital where a male victim was treated and released. Two other females remain hospitalized with moderate injuries.

Police said the SUV had been stopped for a traffic violation but sped away about one minute before the crash.

The SUV "may have matched one of the vehicles they were were looking at in connection with the shootings," Pasadena Police Lt. Pete Hettema told City News Service.

None of the four people in the SUV were seriously hurt, but did require medical treatment for moderate injuries, officials said.

All four suspects were arrested for vehicular manslaughter at the Pasadena Police Department Jail.

The accident is under investigation.
