Alleged Gunman Jailed Following Shootings Outside OC Mall

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A Garden Grove man remained in custody Sunday after allegedly opening fire outside an Orange County mall.

Marcos Sarinana Gurrola, 42, was arrested on Saturday night standing near his vehicle which he reportedly lives in.

The incident was first reported around 4:30 p.m. and prompted several stores at Fashion Island to secure their doors, police reported.

Witness accounts from the scene said the suspect was in the parking lot outside of Macy's when he allegedly fired approximately 50 rounds from his handgun into the air.

Police said no one was struck, but one shopper suffered minor injuries while fleeing the area.

The mall was packed with thousands of people at the time. Many of them hid in dressing rooms, bathrooms and behind locked doors at various storefronts.

"I was thinking about what happened yesterday [Friday]. That's the first thing that came to my head. I thought 'Oh my God. I have my son with me.' I didn't want him to have to be a part of that," said Hanaa Escatel, a shopper.

"First time in my life, I've ever seen kids and adults with that sheer terror on their face," said Matt Lundin, a Nordstrom employee. "All they heard was 'shooter' and 'run'."

Jeff Nguyen, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, spoke to the Deputy Chief of the Newport Beach Police Department. David McGill described Gurrola as "a destitute individual" who said "this was his way of venting his life problems."

Nguyen said Gurrola is reportedly a security guard by trade.

Gurrola was taken into custody without incident. According to the Associated Press, he has been charged with shooting at an inhabited dwelling and is being held on $250,000 bail.
