LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Monday will be the busiest day in history for FedEx as the company is expected to handle 19 million packages.

Approximately 20,000 seasonal personnel have been hired, in addition to the 300,000 regular FedEx team members, to process more than 200 packages per second worldwide, company officials said.

“I’m excited because it gives me the opportunity to deliver new packages, what they need for the customer — meet new faces,” a FedEx driver said.

A majority of Monday’s packages will be from online orders in what eBay has coined as “Green Monday.”

“Increased e-commerce spending is directly contributing to record holiday FedEx volumes and a 10 percent year-over-year increase in volume from 2011,” FedEx officials said in a statement.

In addition to the more than 300,000 employees, a network of 1,800 FedEx locations, 90,000 vehicles, 660 aircraft and even boats, gondolas, electric tricycles, all-electric delivery vans and hybrid-electric delivery vans will help the company meet holiday deadlines.

“Make sure your package has the correct address and a phone number just in case we need to contact the recipient,” Henry Villanueva, FedEx Senior Manager, said.

In 2005, the busiest day for FedEx was on Dec. 12 with 9.8 million shipments, compared to 15.6 million on Dec. 13, 2010.

Last year, the busiest day was Dec. 12 when the shipper handled 17.2 million packages.

There are 30 FedEx shipping and processing locations in Los Angeles.

The deadline for guaranteed delivery by Christmas is Dec. 17 for ground shipping and Dec. 22 for express.
