Tow Truck Driver Fatally Struck By DUI Suspect On 405 Freeway

SIGNAL HILL (CBSLA.com) — A tow truck driver was fatally struck by a DUI suspect on the 405 Freeway near Long Beach early Sunday.

The accident occurred on the northbound side of the freeway in Signal Hill shortly after 2 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Faapuna Manu came to the aide of a man whose Mercedes-Benz was parked on the shoulder of the freeway. The tow truck driver was inflating a spare tire, while standing on the driver's side of his truck, when he was struck by a motorist.

Los Angeles resident Raymond Burley, 26, was driving the Toyota Camry that struck Manu and went on to collide with the Mercedes, the CHP reported.

Manu was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Mercedes was not hurt.

Burley was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Investigators initially closed four northbound lanes and the Orange Avenue off-ramp. All lanes were reopened by 7 a.m.
