Santa Ana Police Officers Take Needy Children Shopping At Target

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — What does a 7-year-old Santa Ana girl buy with a $60 gift card at Target?

An Easy-Bake Oven, of course, but Analiza Hernandez, whose father is no longer able to work because of a double amputation, also picked out a dog bone and socks for her family.

"Analiza came to shop – technically its for her. She didn't want to shop for her -- she was quick to go shop for her family," Santa Ana police gang Detective Armando Chacon said. "She knew exactly what she wanted. She wanted to go straight for her mother's gift, dad's gift, big on Michael Jackson, knew exactly what she wanted. Very thoughtful for someone her age."

Eleven Santa Ana families were invited to shop at Target, with the help of a uniformed police officer and a Target employee for the first-ever Heroes & Helpers event.

Each student shopper got a $60 gift certificate and an invitation to an after-shopping Christmas party, KNX 1070's Mike Landa reports.

"It's gonna be an opportunity to bring the children closer to the police department in the community," Lynette Ovietto of Target said. "And then, also just providing a little more for the family this season than they would have been able to provide."
