Burbank Man Charged With Killing His Infant Daughter

BURBANK (CBS/AP) — A man has been charged with murdering his 5-week-old daughter after she was taken to a hospital for broken bones.

Matthew Wojcik, 19, was originally charged with one count each of assault and child abuse, but prosecutors added the murder charge Monday. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.

Wojcik remains in jail on $1 million bail.

The father brought his baby last month to Children's Hospital Los Angeles, where she was treated for multiple broken bones and brain swelling. Caregivers called police to report possible child abuse. The infant succumbed to her injuries after being taken off life support.

The baby's mother, Elizabeth Carter, was arrested Wednesday morning and released less than five hours later, after posting $130,000 in bail. She has been charged with one count of child abuse causing death.
