Woman Fatally Struck In Coachella Hit-And-Run

COACHELLA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a 63-year-old woman has died after being struck by a sport utility vehicle in Coachella.

Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Juan Zamora said in a department statement that the victim was hit as she crossed Avenue 49 south of Harrison Street. The accident occurred about 5:11 p.m. Saturday.

"The driver of the SUV fled the scene, but was located a short time later in the area of Harrison Street and Sixth Street in Coachella," Zamora said.

The suspect was identified by deputies as 31-year-old Sara Valencia Rojas. She was booked into Riverside County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run.

The victim was identified by the coroner's office as 63-year-old Celia Miranda of Coachella. Miranda was taken to an area hospital where she died.
