2 Killed In High-Speed Crash In Pacoima

PACOIMA (CBSLA.com) — Two people were killed in a high-speed car crash in Pacoima Friday afternoon.

The accident happened around 3:45 p.m. near Foothill Boulevard and Filmore Street.

"A small Volkswagen Jetta travelling southbound on Foothill struck a van that was trying to turn left on Filmore. The (Jetta) was traveling at a high rate of speed, left the road and hit with such a force... that it popped around a light (pole)," said Capt. Jeffrey Bert from the LAPD's Valley Traffic Division.

Bert said the 19-year-old female passenger of the Jetta was killed on impact.

The 23-year-old male driver later died at the hospital.

The two victims were apparently co-workers who took the man's new car out for a spin.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but police believe speed was the main factor.

KCAL9's Serene Branson reported that five people have died in traffic accidents in the San Fernando Valley in the past six days.

There have been 49 fatal crashes in the area so far this year, which is an 18 percent increase compared to 2011.
