Advocate Discusses Link Between Diabetes, Gum Disease

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Dr. Nat Strand -- the season 17 winner of "The Amazing Race" -- stopped by the KCAL9 studios on Saturday to discuss the link between diabetes and Gingivitis, also known as, gum disease.

After appearing on the "Race," Dr. Strand says she has been working to raise awareness of diabetes and help people get their disease under control.

"Most people don't know that there's a link between diabetes and gum disease. When you have diabetes, whether it is Type 1 or Type 2, you have double the risk of gum disease." Strand said.

"The reason this is important is not only because of your oral health, but it's a two way street. If you have bad gum disease, it can also make your blood sugars harder to control and out of control blood sugars are what put you at higher risk for complications down the road."

In addition to visiting the dentist every six months, Dr. Strand recommends brushing your teeth for two minutes, twice a day with an antibacterial toothpaste and flossing at least once a day. For more information on preventing gum disease, visit Colgate.com.

Along with working as a Colgate Total oral health and diabetes advocate, Dr. Strand is a practicing physician of interventional pain management at USC Keck School of Medicine.
