Arson Suspected Following Overnight Fires In Pomona

POMONA (CBSLA.com) — A boat and four vehicles suffered extensive damage Sunday following an overnight fire in Pomona and authorities were investigating arson as a possible cause.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 1600 block of Keystone Avenue following an initial report of an apartment fire. The call came in just before 1 a.m., authorities report.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a number of vehicles torched at a carport.

KNX 1070's Ed Mertz reports that Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Tom Richards says firefighters kept the flames from reaching nearby buildings. No residents were displaced.

Mertz said the damage to the vehicles was extensive. Some were totaled while parts on other vehicles were melted by the intense heat.

Richards said firefighters knocked down the blaze around the same time they were called to a fire in a nearby trash bin.

"It's very rare that a trash can [fire] would start and a car or a boat [fire] would start at the same time," he said.

An arson investigation by the Pomona Police Department is under way.
