Glendora Man Comes Face-To-Face With 400-Pound Bear

GLENDORA (CBSLA.com) — A Glendora man encountered a peculiar Peeping Tom outside his home on Friday afternoon—a 400-pound brown bear.

The animal was spotted in the backyard of Gavin Schofield-Smith's house on East Sierra Madre Avenue.

Schofield-Smith said he was working on his laptop when his dog, Molly, started to growl.

"The bear was literally right (at the window)," he said.

Schofield-Smith said the bear just wanted to sleep and got angry when Glendora police arrived.

"He was growling when we were near it and when rescue came," he said.

Police shot the bear with a bean bag and pepper balls and pushed it through yards before it finally went back to the hillsides.

Schofield-Smith said he was surprised to see the animal in the daytime since bears in the neighborhood are usually active at night.

The furry visitors have also never been in his family's backyard where his kids play.

"It was a good teaching opportunity with the kids," said Schofield-Smith. "Make sure we say it's cute, but we don't go anywhere near there. The other side of the glass makes no difference if it's a bear because it can go through the glass in seconds."
