Man Commits Suicide, Ending 8-Hour Standoff

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — An eight-hour standoff in Orange County ended Tuesday morning after a suspect committed suicide.

The standoff began at 9:15 p.m. Monday when authorities received a call from a woman who stated a man had entered her home and threatened her with a gun.

The unidentified woman was able to escape unharmed from her Balboa Coves home when Newport Beach police officers arrived.

Police were later able to make contact with the suspect over the phone, officials said.

"He was threatening suicide and barricaded himself inside the home," Kathy Lowe of the Newport Beach Police Department said.

SWAT was called to the gated community at 10:15 p.m. and approximately eight nearby residents were evacuated, police said.

The standoff ended around 5 a.m. Tuesday when "SWAT Team officers were able to enter the home and they discovered the suspect suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound," Lowe said.

He was taken to a local hospital in unknown condition where he later died.

The relationship between the woman and the suspect was unclear, however officials say they did know each other.
