Man, 19, Convicted In Murder Of Silver Lake Pizza Deliverer
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A 19-year-old man was convicted Thursday in the second-degree murder of a pizza deliveryman he shot in a case of road rage.
The Los Angeles Superior Court jury deliberated less than two hours before finding Jose Beltran guilty of second-degree murder for the Aug. 7, 2011, shooting of Juan David Vasquez Loma, who was taken off life support a week later.
Beltran also was convicted of two counts of attempted murder. Two of Loma's co-workers were passengers in the car.
Beltran was also found guilty of one count each of shooting at an occupied motor vehicle and carrying a loaded firearm not registered in his name.
Jurors also found true allegations that Beltran personally discharged a handgun, but found not true allegations that the crimes were committed for the benefit of a criminal street gang. Loma, 25, was shot once in the head in what police described as an apparent road-rage attack. He had passed Beltran's vehicle at a stop sign less than a mile away from the 1400 block of Silver Lake Boulevard, where the shooting occurred, according to Deputy District Attorney Amy Ashvanian.
Beltran -- who is facing multiple life prison sentences -- is due back Nov. 1 for sentencing before Judge Clifford Klein.
Defense attorney Simon Aval said he expected to file a motion seeking a new trial.
