Arrest Made In Connection With Smoke Shop Robbery

MANHATTAN BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Police say they have made an arrest in connection with a violent robbery at a smoke shop in Manhattan Beach.

A watch commander from the Manhattan Beach Police Department confirmed to CBS2 on Friday that the suspect was in custody. He was identified by authorities as 18-year-old Tyler Rodgers.

Security footage from the Aug. 16 incident shows a man in a button-down shirt and tie walk into the Cigar and Smoke Shop on Artesia Boulevard carrying a long and narrow cardboard box.

Within seconds, the suspect can be seen pulling a gun out of a cardboard box and demanding money from the employee, police said.

According to police, the robber then handcuffed the victim in the backroom, took a cash box and allegedly slashed the clerk's throat.

The victim was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery and was said to be recovering, according to City News Service.

Details surrounding Rodgers' arrest were not immediately available. According to authorities, Rodgers was on probation for robbery.
