1 Dead, 2 Injured In South Los Angeles Shooting

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — One suspect is in custody and police are searching for a second gunman after a deadly shooting at a South Los Angeles home.

Three people, including a 9-year-old boy, were shot Saturday night at the Avalon Gardens apartment complex just south of Manchester Avenue. One of the victims, 37-year-old De Edmond Brown, was killed. Brown's family says he once had ties to a gang and that his girlfriend is 5 months pregnant.

The boy, Alberto Vasquez, was shot in the hip. His father was also struck, but was treated at a local hospital and later released.

CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Jeff Nguyen spoke to the 9-year-old victim's family on Sunday.

"I feel sad because they're shooting over here. Why would they do that?" 12-year-old Destiny Vasquez told CBS2. "Those people are … they're just being mean. They're probably hating on us."

For Vasquez, her home will always be a reminder of where her brother, father and uncle were shot.

The Vasquez family was having a get together in front of their home when the gunmen walked out of a nearby alley and began shooting.

The family ran inside, but witnesses say one of the shooters was so bold, he ran into the house after the group and continued firing.

One of the gunmen was shot in the leg by the other shooter during the attack. He was arrested when he later showed up at a hospital.
