Detectives Probe Alleged Assault Of Pregnant Woman In Gardena

GARDENA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities on Sunday were investigating whether an alleged assault of a 36-year-old pregnant woman led to the termination of a nearly 9-week-old fetus.

A news release by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says the victim and a 23-year-old woman, allegedly her adult son's girlfriend, got involved in an argument that turned physical about 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

The incident occurred in the 2500 block of East 130th Street in Gardena.

The statement says the suspect allegedly struck the victim in the abdomen several times.

She was taken to an area hospital where doctors said the fetus was no longer viable, according to deputies.

The identities of those involved have been withheld.

The statement says victim told authorities she had gone to a medical appointment on Friday, "during which everything related to the pregnancy was reported to be fine."

Anyone with more information about this case was asked to call authorities at (323) 890-5500.
