Magnitude 4.5 Earthquake Shakes Yorba Linda

YORBA LINDA (CBSLA.com) — The second earthquake in less than 10 hours struck Orange County Wednesday morning.

The 4.5-magnitude temblor hit around 9:33 a.m. and was centered about 2 miles north-northeast of Yorba Linda, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake was followed by a magnitude 3.4 aftershock felt in the same area at around 9:51 a.m., the USGS reported.

There were no reports of damage or injuries.

A magnitude 4.4 quake hit the same area at 11:23 p.m. Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Lucy Jones of Caltech told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO the second quake is known as a "doublet" because it is part of the same sequence as yesterday's earthquake and is of the same magnitude and location.

"They're definitely a related sequence," Jones said. "Five percent of the time you get something bigger, here we hit it exactly on the same."

KNX 1070's Margret Carrero reports Yorba Linda resident Brian reported feeling an "extremely large jolt."

"I'm in a machine shop and I thought something fell," he said.

Rick, who was in his car at John Wayne Airport, said he saw people begin running out of the terminal when the quake struck.

"People that aren't from California freak out at the slightest little thing," he said.

Dr. Kate Hutton of Caltech said while there is "about a 1 in 20 chance" that any earthquake could be a foreshock to a bigger event, she expects there will most likely be more smaller quakes ahead.
