Bear Trio Returns To Pasadena Foothills

PASADENA (CBSLA.com) — Residents who live in the foothills above Pasadena are being urged to protect their garbage cans from marauding bears.

Homeowners say the same bears that were seen taking a dip in a Pasadena pool on Monday have been raiding garbage cans and endangering pets.

"They'll come in all the time and it's a brown bear and two cubs," said resident Brett Kelly.

The bear trio showed up at Kelly's home Monday night, where they frolicked in his pool and went through some trash.

Kelly was especially worried when his dog started barking at the bears.

"He's trying to fight (the mother bear) out of the yard and I had to run out and get him away from her," he said.

Kelly said the dog made a last minute move to get away.

"I was yelling and screaming and trying to make noise, but (the mother) was protecting her cubs," he said.

Police said they get two to three calls a day about the mother and her cubs.

Local leaders are urging people to secure their garbage.

"All they have to do is give us a call and we'll bear proof their trash cans," said Pasadena's Public Works Superintendent.
