Hawthorne Man Arrested For Allegedly Stealing Luggage At LAX

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A Hawthorne man was arrested after authorities received a tip he was allegedly stealing luggage at Los Angeles International Airport, Los Angeles Airport Police said Friday.

Fidel Enrique Fleites, 54, was taken into custody at his home after police saw the suspect remove other people's luggage from a baggage carousel through surveillance video.

Officials seized jewelry, electronics, clothing and other items from Fleites' home and returned it to the victims, according to Sgt. Belinda Nettles.

"This arrest highlights the close cooperation and continuous teamwork of the LAX Crime Task Force," Los Angeles Airport Police Chief Michael Hyams said in a statement. "The positive results of our joint operations contribute to LAX's reputation as one of the safest airports in the United States."

Fleites appeared in court Monday, according to the sheriff's Inmate Information Center.

No information is available regarding his expected release date.
