Colo. Shooting Suspect's Family Speaks Out Through Attorney

SAN DIEGO (CBS) — A lawyer for the family of Colorado shooting suspect James Holmes says the family stands by him.

"Yes they do. He's their son," Attorney Lisa Damiani said during a news conference in San Diego Monday.

She also said their hearts go out to all the victims and their families.

Damiani read a statement from Arlene Holmes, Holmes' mother, claiming a comment that had been released by ABC News Friday was taken out of the context.

She said she was awakened by a phone call from a reporter Friday around 5 a.m. asking if she was Arlene Holmes and if James Holmes in Aurora, Colo., was her son. She responded with, "You have the right person." She says she was referring to herself. When the reporter allegedly told her about the shooting and asked for a comment, she said she refused.

Damiani refused to comment on the whereabouts of the family, but said she is concerned for their safety.

She said the family has elected not to express the relationship they have with their son.
