Affair, Fight And Dual Restraining Orders Rock San Fernando City Council

SAN FERNANDO (CBS) — The city of San Fernando is reeling from a scandal involving two City Council members who reportedly carried on an extra-marital affair, then had a fight and dual restraining orders filed against the other.

CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Greg Mills said trouble started brewing last year -- when the affair first came to light -- and the drama has only increased.

And now it's getting ugly.

Former lovers and City Council members Maribel De La Torre and Mario Hernandez have both filed restraining orders against the other. The police are investigating. And it's all headed to court.

Mills reports the restraining orders stem from a confrontation that took place on June 28th.

De La Torre's attorney told Mills that Hernandez "molested" his former lover that day.

Hernandez denies the charge. "I have never raised my hand against her at any time or at any other woman in my life."

He was mayor of San Fernando last November when he stunned his fellow council members at a meeting -- with his wife in attendance. He said, "I'd like to put out there, before, and squash the rumors, that yes, I have been in a relationship with Councilwoman De La Torre."

His restraining order against her comes on the heels of his filing a police report. He alleges on the June 28th incident, she trashed his home. Police reportedly saw red marks on his neck.

De La Torre released a statement saying, "Words cannot begin to express how saddened I am over the events of the past several days. I would like to address the allegations," but her attorney said she was unable to comment due to the pending court hearing on July 24th.

While the police investigate, the police chief (of four months) has also just been fired. Gil Carrillo was fired this week by the City Council this week.

Neither De La Torre or Hernandez voted on the firing.
