Gun Residue May Solve Death Of Hermosa Beach Woman

HERMOSA BEACH (CBS) —  Detectives on Thursday sought to determine if there was any foul play in the death of a woman in her Hermosa Beach apartment.

KNX 1070's Jon Baird reports neighbors heard the woman arguing with her husband moments before they heard a gunshot.

The victim's husband reported that his wife committed suicide at a residence in the 600 block of 8th Street at 11:10 p.m. on Tuesday, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies.

The woman had a gunshot wound in her upper torso and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Her husband has been questioned, but is not in custody at this time, according to Deputy Aura Sierra, who said the investigation could hinge on gunshot residue.

"Whenever a gun is fired there is always residue, however because it is ongoing, that information will come at a later date," said Sierra.

Investigators typically test for residue —  which is difficult to wash off — on the hands of victims and others involved in any gun-related crime to determine who may have fired the weapon.

Neighbors, who said the couple moved in to the rental home a few months ago and did not have any children, are still shaken up after the shooting, which for many of them is anything but business as usual.

"I thought it was freaky, because Hermosa Beach is a stable, quiet place," said one resident. "It's just not something that happens here."

Anyone with information on the death was asked to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
