'Ace Of Cakes' Star Duff Goldman Opens Decorate-Your-Own Cake Shop

FAIRFAX DISTRICT (CBS) — Now you can make your cake and eat it, too.

Celebrity baker Duff Goldman, of Food Network's hit series "Ace of Cakes," is opening a new decorate-you-own cake shop on Melrose Avenue, next to his custom cake business Charm City Cakes West, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Cakemix is scheduled to open its doors to the public by the end of the week. Like Build-A-Bear and Color Me Mine, it allows customers to directly customize their product -- but, in this case, that includes frosting, sprinkles and getting to consume a cake.

This endeavor sets a much different tone than Charm City Cakes next door, where Goldman and his team create custom cakes largely for the entertainment industry in a space that's closed to the public.

The Times said the process starts with the customer choosing a 6-inch ($36) or 9-inch ($52) round cake to decorate, picking from cake flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, marbled chocolate and vanilla, red velvet, carrot or the flavor of the week, and the filling flavor.

Should the cake be covered in buttercream or fondant? The client decides.

A decorator then guides the cake enthusiast through the process of dressing up the cake.

The customer can spray paint the cake in a booth of floor-to-ceiling glass walls, sprinkle it to their heart's content or apply fondant appliqués.

Duff's Cakemix is set to open at 8302 Melrose Avenue, in Los Angeles, later this week.
