Sun Safety Tips From Dr. Ava Shamban

STUDIO CITY (CBS) — Ready for fun in the summer sun? Not with applying some major SPF!

Dr. Ava Shamban stopped by the KCAL9 studios Friday to talk about sun protection and offered some sunscreen tips.

o Does SPF 80 really work better than 50?
1. As a rule of thumb, pick a broad spectrum sunscreen product of 30 SPF, apply in a double coat, reapply every 2 hours if out in the sun (reapply one time per day if indoors), and reapply more frequently if exercising or swimming. If you are especially fair skinned—or undergoing skin challenges such as adult acne, hormonal changes, pregnancy or chemotherapy--consider choosing a higher SPF rating of up to 50.

o What ingredients to avoid in your sun block:
1. Oxybenzone
2. Retinyl Palminate
