LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Police say thieves are posing as city workers in order to burglarize homes in the Foothill areas.

The burglars have been posing as either Department of Water and Power employees or City of Los Angeles construction workers, Los Angeles police officials say.

They knock on the door of a home and convince whoever answers to let them into the backyard or into the house, purportedly to check wires, police said. While the victim is distracted with the first suspect, another will enter the home and steal valuables.

Residents are advised not to let anyone enter their home or backyard without confirming the person is who he claims to be. When in doubt, call the company, police said.
