Lower Memorial Day Weekend Gas Prices The New Record High

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Gas prices feel like they're going down just in time for the Memorial Day weekend, but make no mistake – Friday's statewide average for a gallon of regular gas is much higher than the old record high in 2008.

In the Los Angeles area, a gallon of regular gas now averages $4.32. In 2008, the record high gas prices was set at $4.03, which was matched in 2011, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.

One man filling up for a trip with his family to Fresno remembers the good old days.

"Five years ago, it was not too bad. Its just getting worse and worse and worse," he said to KNX 1070's John Brooks.

About 2.2 million southern Californians will take overnight trips by car this weekend, an increase of nearly 2 percent from last year.

However, the number of people flying this weekend is expected to drop 5.1 percent, thanks to higher airfares.
