The body was reportedly discovered by a passing motorist about 5:00 a.m. near mile marker 27.50, according to Officer Kevin Denmon of the California Highway Patrol.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is working with the CHP in a joint investigation, Denmon said.

The Angeles Crest Highway was subsequently closed about three miles north of the Foothill (210) Freeway about 6:30 a.m. and will remain closed until at least 5 p.m.

Authorities advised all motorists heading up to the high desert through the highway to take the Interstate 5 freeway up to the 14 Freeway or make alternate travel plans.

The cause of death and the identity of the man will be established by the coroner's office, Sheriff's Sgt. Diane Hecht said.

It was determined, however, that Gavin Smith, a missing person, has been ruled out as the victim.
