Ariz. Sheriff Investigating Obama Birth Certificate Makes SoCal Campaign Stop

BEVERLY HILLS (CBS) — The self-described "toughest sheriff" in America was in the Southland on Friday to support a San Bernardino congressional candidate.

Maricopa County (Ariz.) Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced his endorsement of Republican Phil Liberatore, who is running for congressman in the Eighth District in San Bernardino, Mono and Inyo counties.

Arpaio was on hand at Beverly Hills City Hall at a rally for Liberatore, a syndicated radio show host who along with Arpaio shares a strictly constitutional approach to combating illegal immigration.

The event marked the second time in over a year that Arpaio has appeared with Liberatore since the two paired up for a lecture series on the grounds of the Nixon Presidential Library & Museum in Yorba Linda last February.

Arpaio made headlines back in March when he held a news conference to announce the results of a preliminary investigation into whether the long-form birth certificate of President Barack Obama was a forgery.

The team of volunteer investigators comprised of current and retired law enforcement personnel found that there was "probable cause to believe forgery and fraud occurred" regarding both Obama's birth certificate and his Selective Service card.

Arpaio said then he was unsure what his next step would be, but did call for a congressional inquiry into the findings of the investigation.
