Officials Probe Car-To-Car Shooting On 110 Freeway In Torrance

TORRANCE (CBS) — Officials Friday were continuing their investigation into an apparent car-to-car shooting on the 110 Freeway.

Nguyen Tran, 21, of Placentia, was shot in the ear while driving on the northbound side of the freeway near Torrance Avenue at 2:45 p.m. Thursday.

Tran, who had just dropped off his girlfriend at Los Angeles Harbor College, was on the Torrance Boulevard on-ramp when he heard a loud bang. He pulled over and realized he had been shot, but was able to call 911.

"We believe somebody pulled alongside him, just by the nature of the incident and where it occurred," CHP Sgt. Dave Nelms said. "It was on the driver's side and he was in the far right-hand lane, so we do have a couple witnesses we're trying to track down at this point."

Tran told investigators that he has no idea why anyone would want to shoot him. Detectives are asking for any witnesses to come forward.

The freeway was shut down for roughly three hours, which caused a two-mile backup, according to the CHP.

Tran was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and was listed in stable condition Friday.
