'America's Pie Lady' Shares How Baking Helped Her Heal From Loss

STUDIO CITY (CBS) — Nothing screams America like a good slice of pie.

For Beth Howard, who's been dubbed "America's Pie Lady," pie has been served as more than just a baked good -- it has been her way of life.

Baking since she was 17 years old, Howard pursued a wide range of careers in journalism and entertainment before coming back to her passion for pastry.

In "MAKING PIECE: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Pie" Howard discusses the devastating death of her husband and how pies, and a journey in his RV, helped her heal. Howard visited CBS2 / KCAL9 to discuss the launch of her book and offer some baking tips.

Her blog, TheWorldNeedsMorePie, which launched in 2007, has been featured in Better Homes and Gardens, the New York Times, and NPR's Weekend Edition. Currently, Howard lives in Eldon, Iowa, in the famous American Gothic House, where she runs the Pitchfork Pie Stand, writes for magazines and teaches pie baking to groups.
