Officials Tranquilize Bear In Backyard Of La Crescenta Home

LA CRESCENTA (CBS) — Fish and game officers tranquilized and tagged a bear that was seen roaming around a neighborhood in La Crescenta Tuesday morning.

KNX 1070's Pete Demetriou reports it took as many as 8 sheriff's deputies to transport the animal after it was captured.

The bear, which weighs 400 pounds, was found in the backyard of a home in the 2300 block of Mayfield Avenue shortly before sunrise on Tuesday. It had been spotted several times over the past three weeks around the Glendale area.

The approximately 3-year-old animal, which will be moved to the Angeles National Forest, was struck with at least two darts and may have been previously spotted in the neighborhood.

"This bear was into some garbage cans, but didn't pose a public safety risk at all, so we left it alone until this morning. The opportunity presented itself to dart it safely," Alex Hughan of the Department of Fish and Game told KNX 1070.
