OC Doc Accused Of Writing Phony Prescriptions For His Own Drug Use

NEWPORT BEACH (AP) — Irvine police say a doctor allegedly wrote prescriptions for amphetamines and other pills for a girlfriend and an ex-girlfriend with the intention of using the drugs himself.

Lt. Julia Engen said Friday that 42-year-old Brian Michael Swan is charged with 24 felonies, including obtaining a controlled substance by fraud.

Engen says Swan and his girlfriend broke up, and in the months that followed he allegedly wrote 22 prescriptions for her without her knowledge.

The plan worked until the victim's insurance denied the prescription at the pharmacy. When the pharmacist contacted the victim, she had no knowledge of the prescriptions.

Irvine police investigated and learned of a second victim.

Swan faces a maximum sentence of 11 years and eight months in state prison if convicted of all counts.
