Azusa Man Admits To Poisoning Wife's Cereal, Gets 8 Years In Prison

POMONA (CBS) — An Azusa man was sentenced to eight years in state prison after pleading no contest Wednesday to poisoning his wife's cereal.

Fernando Porras, 43, admitted to pouring "Goof Off," a paint remover, into his wife's cereal bowl shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 12. Porras' wife, who ingested a spoonful, was taken to a local hospital by paramedics, but did not sustain any permanent injuries, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Porras left the hospital when police arrived and was arrested at another location later that night. Porras says he accidentally spilled the substance into his wife's cereal, according to Deputy District Attorney Cynthia Valenzuela.

Porras' wife immediately suspected her husband was trying to harm her because the two were having marital problems, according to testimony from his preliminary hearing.

Porras pleaded no contest to one count of poisoning and admitted an allegation that the substance could have caused death or great bodily harm. An attempted murder charge was dismissed after Porras entered his no contest plea.
