EL CAJON (AP) — A 32-year-old woman from Iraq is not expected to survive after being severely beaten in her Southern California home, and police say a threatening note was found at the scene.

El Cajon police Lt. Steve Shakowski says the woman’s 17-year-old daughter found her unconscious Wednesday in the family’s dining room. Police identified the victim as Shaima Alawadi.

Investigators did not disclose the contents of the note. UT San Diego quotes a family friend who says the note told the family to “go back to your own country.”

The newspaper reports the family is from Iraq and that Alawadi wears a traditional head scarf.

Lt. Mark Coit says the family stated they had found a similar note earlier this month, but did not report it to police.
