Gunman Sought After Chino Police Officer Shot In Botched Robbery

CHINO (CBS) — A police officer was hospitalized on Wednesday after being shot during an attempted robbery at a Chino bank.

The unidentified officer from the Chino Police Department reported shots fired around 10:50 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

A man wearing a black stocking cop and body armor was spotted outside California Bank & Trust at 5455 Riverside Drive when the officer arrived at the bank, deputies said.

The suspect was spotted fleeing the scene in a grey Nissan Altima with Arizona license plates. He is described as an adult white male with blue eyes between 6' and 6'2" tall and weighing between 200 to 250 pounds.

The officer was able to transport himself to Chino Valley Hospital for treatment. He suffered a leg wound and remains in stable condition.

Officers evacuated employees from the bank in a ongoing search for the gunman.

KNX 1070's Ed Mertz reports two nearby residents who live across from the bank witnessed the entire episode.

Both witnesses said they saw the gunman armed with an AK-47 open fire on the officer as he cruised by the location and saw the robbery in progress.

"It was rapid-fire, anywhere from six to nine shots continuous," said one resident.

Two area schools, Walnut Elementary and Chino Valley High School, were placed on lockdown immediately following the shooting, but that lockdown was reported as lifted shortly before 1:00 p.m.
