OC Sex Addiction Expert Blasts Ad With Model 'Having Sex With A Hamburger'

LAGUNA BEACH (CBS) — Too much bun, not enough burger.

KNX 1070's Mike Landa reports that's what one Southland sex addiction expert is saying about a fast food commercial featuring supermodel Kate Upton.

Steve Arteburn, the founder of New Life Ministries in Laguna Beach, is calling on Carl's Jr. to pull the racy ad that features the Sports Illustrated bikini model suggestively interacting with a Southwest patty melt.

"A guy's just sitting there watching a program, and it's a hamburger ad, and all of a sudden it's somebody having sex with a hamburger," said Arteburn.

His ministry specializes in offering men with help in overcoming sexual addiction, an issue that the New Life Ministries website says can be "as damaging as drug [and] alcohol addiction".

Arteburn even pointed to the likely reaction the commercial would elicit from the late Carl's Jr. founder Karl Karcher.

"He'd really be sick to know that this is what people have resorted to to sell one of his hamburgers," said Arterburn.

But Carl's Jr. spokeswoman Beth Mansfield said the Upton ad has received mostly positive feedback on social media and is intended specifically for "young, hungry guys" ages 18 to 34.

"We don't try to offend other groups or exclude other groups, but we just want to appeal and amuse this specific audience," she said.
