LAGUNA BEACH (CBS) — Too much bun, not enough burger.

KNX 1070’s Mike Landa reports that’s what one Southland sex addiction expert is saying about a fast food commercial featuring supermodel Kate Upton.

Steve Arteburn, the founder of New Life Ministries in Laguna Beach, is calling on Carl’s Jr. to pull the racy ad that features the Sports Illustrated bikini model suggestively interacting with a Southwest patty melt.

“A guy’s just sitting there watching a program, and it’s a hamburger ad, and all of a sudden it’s somebody having sex with a hamburger,” said Arteburn.

His ministry specializes in offering men with help in overcoming sexual addiction, an issue that the New Life Ministries website says can be “as damaging as drug [and] alcohol addiction”.

Arteburn even pointed to the likely reaction the commercial would elicit from the late Carl’s Jr. founder Karl Karcher.

“He’d really be sick to know that this is what people have resorted to to sell one of his hamburgers,” said Arterburn.

But Carl’s Jr. spokeswoman Beth Mansfield said the Upton ad has received mostly positive feedback on social media and is intended specifically for “young, hungry guys” ages 18 to 34.

“We don’t try to offend other groups or exclude other groups, but we just want to appeal and amuse this specific audience,” she said.

I find most Carl’s commercials disgusting. I refuse to eat there for that reason. Even if they are not sexy, they show people with food dripping from their mouths. What is the point? To see someone eating with no manners doesn’t inspire me to go there.

    1. S. Smith says:

Dear Carl’s Jr. : This add was completely over the top. If this is what you need to do to get our our attention, then. well, you’ve lost it, along with my business.

Please sign this Petition to STOP Carl’s Jr. Sexist Commercial on Prime-time television where young children and impressionable teenagers/young adults (Their Number One Target) are being exposed to such immoral, sexually explicit content. And please share with your friends and family. Together we can, and will make a difference.Thank You For Your Help!

Ummm, I do have a life TS; How do you suppose I’m typing this reply to you…Wow, and another imbecile speaks up.

There really should be at least one guideline to posting here: Your mentality must be that of at least a three year old.

take your head out of his pants,,

    3. TLC says:

Last week I saw this commercial for the first time & was appauled at the idea of incorporating a sexual overture while eating a cheesburger….It truly disgusted me. As intelligent Americans, we need to boycott Burger King or any establishment that would stoop to this level of advertisement.

  2. merelyashadow says:

Its lost on me. I don’t see why Carl’s needs to resort to th is to sell a burger. I get that guys would like it, but they’d like it if it were selling post it notes.

  3. J says:

Carls Jr commericals are disgusting and they don’t understand the public at all, we want good food that tastes good and looks good. We are not looking for sex when we go to buy a buger, just good food. They need to work on the food looking even half of they way they portray it in ads.

  4. C Carroll Adams, PhD says:

What qualifies this Steve Arteburn as an expert on sex addiction?
Does he routinely rant and rage against other TV commercials not to his taste?

Or, could it be that this is Arteburn’s pathetic attempt at gaining publicity?

I watch KCAL and KCBS News often and in my car I listen to KNX. I respect the work of Mike Landa, but I do not recall that he previously interviewed this Steve Arteburn,

    1. TLC says:

My name is not Steve Arteburn, but I am a qualified grandmother of six up & coming grandchildren, & I object to the obsurd & suggestive matter of this commercial that is blatently selling sex & burgers. Wake up………there is increased sexual abuse, physical abuse, youth murders & suicide. We don’t need anymore TRASH on our television for any age.

      1. Lynn says:

well said TLC thanks for stepping up

  5. John Pelligrini says:

NO COMMENT, because this gentlman is smoking something, and making something out of nothing,

  6. KIm says:

The say that they don’t try to offend other groups or exclude other groups, but we don’t have a choice they air it at times of the day when Women and children are watch family shows and the FCC doesn’t do anything about it and the TV stations don’t care. I always turn the channel but something you don’t have time to turn it the image is already been seen and I should not have to set in front of my family TV with the remote in my had every time a commercial add come on. But I do!!!

    1. Corinne says:

I agree Kim, the viewers don’t have a choice. I don’t see how they have the nerve to say that they don’t want to offend anyone with that raunchy commercial!!

  7. KIm says:

OK…target them with a hamburg then, not with girls. Girls are not a piece of meat.
Why don;t you tell the truth. Women don’t buy Carl’s Jr. meat because why buy the whole Pig just to get a little sausage.

  8. merelyashadow says:

A good hamburger should stand on its own. You don’t have to sell it.

  9. D. M. King says:

Steve Arteburn is a self-styled “expert.” He is not recognized by any psychological organization. He is a minister most famous for getting a woman pregnant out of wedlock and then having her get an abortion. He also founded an organization called “Women of Faith,” indicating that either he has issues over his own sexuality or completely misrepresents the organization and it’s purposes. The fact that CBS would pay any attention to this publicity-seeking person of questionable character makes one wonder how much research you actually do, how challenged you are to get real news from real experts, or how much he paid you to get publicity.

    1. Judy says:

try listening to his New Life Live radio program some time or read a Life Recovery Bible or one of the many books he has written and you will have a different perspective….what skeletons do you have in your closet?

    2. Phil says:

This is a mischaracterization of Steve Arterburn. His heart is to see that people’s lives become whole. What is your motivation?

  10. Bonnie says:

I’m not Christian nor conservative, but this ad is over the top….pull it !

    1. Lynn says:

I agree with you – too much of this junk is on our TV’s today – for that reason alone, I choose not to watch it at all. I agree to pull these types of commercials off the air.

    2. Suzie says:

Absolutely over the top. It needs to be taken off the air. It comes on during my morning news, before it’s even 9am!

  11. Timothy McGarry says:

What channel is this New Vision mini-series on?

  12. kraffty says:

How about they put a condom on the beef, problem solved for all concerned

  13. jkflutterbug says:

Actually, Steve Arteburn is most known for authoring “Every Man’s Battle,” being the host of “New Life Live,” and being the founder of the Every Man’s Battle workshops. Every Man’s Battle, both in book and workshop form, is all about helping men cope with living in a sex-saturated culture and overcoming sexual addictions. New Life Live is a call-in counseling show that helps people with a wide range of questions. Yes, he did get a girl pregnant and pay for her abortion during his college days. He’s very open about sharing his own story and his own struggles. Yes, he was the founder of Women of Faith, which has been a huge blessing to literally millions of women. He no longer is the owner or operator of that ministry.

    1. Lynn says:

Hats off to a man who is willing to come forth and admit his mistakes in his past and actually DO something about them while helping others in the process !!

  14. Realist says:

Steve Arteburn is a quack, no credentials just another Christian fleecing the flock with bogus self proclaimed expertise ?

    1. Elizabeth Silva says:

He’s working on a doctorate in counseling. I have a lot of respect for his work; he consults with credentialed experts constantly, has researched and written many, many books. You ought to check out his program.

    2. Leet says:

Realist ??? How can you be a realist without facts? Research the man before posting your speculations.

  15. Trish says:

I know, if you don’t like it, don’t watch it…… that’s OK for me, but what about us parents that do not want our children to watch this AD. Shows and games have warnings about whats about to come on TV, why do these discusting AD’s not have to have the warning?

  16. Larry B. says:

This guy is yet another example of the nutjob rightwingers who only experience sex by watching commercials such as this. He is a headline seeking quack and shares the noncredentials of “Dr.”Phil. Neither is really a “doctor” at all. In fact, “Dr.” Phil lost his license to practice years ago for having sex with his patients. The State of Texas, and no other state, will ever reinstate that license. I wonder why Oprah conveniently ignored that fact. Arteburn is of the same ilk and is clearly trading on the name of The Lord and fleecing his “flock”. How sad.

    1. Lynn says:

you are the sick one Larry – I would like to see evidence proving one word of what you just stated above. You are the one who should be sad.

  17. KeithS says:

First, Carl’s Jr. has made it quite clear through the years who they want to market to. I don’t see what the big deal is. Second, I hate this “sex addiction” stuff. Last I heard, the reigning medical boards of psychiatry, etc do not yet recognize this as a real disease. I mean we only seem to hear about it when a rich, good-looking celebrity is unfaithful to his lady. My hunch is in those cases, their addiction is a cop out to the fact they love what money and fame brings them.Show me some poor, bad looking dude who comes out as a sex addict and maybe I’ll start believing there is a kernel of truth to this so called “disease.”

    1. Leet says:

“We” only hear about it? Speak for yourself. The reigning boards have a long history of not recognizing new perspectives, explanations discoveries and facts until years afterward. And for your sheltered info, there are loads of poor, bad looking dudes who “come out” as sex addicts. Maybe if you’d get out of your cocoon you’d realize it instead of just “hearing” about it. .

    2. CKH says:

Oh, “this sex addition stuff” is real and you really need to do your own research on a topic that you know very little about it would appear.

“There is a relationship between what we think and do and our brains. Psychology and biology have long suspected this, but only recently have they found support in the scientific literature: functionalism causes structuralism. Translated this means that sexual addiction like other obsessive-compulsive behaviors causes a biochemical response in the brain. Recent research has suggested that you can actually change how your brain responds to thoughts and urges. You can physically change the way your brain works. ”
      A. Dean Byrd, Ph.D., MBA, MPH

Are you able to accept that there are addictions to alcohol, food, drugs, etc. Why is it so hard then to accept the fact that sexual addiction also exists. Again, do some reading on the subject then make informed comments.

    3. Jeff B says:

I’m someone who has overcome a sexual addiction. It is real and it’s everywhere. That’s exactly why these commercials work. If you can’t look away from it no matter how hard you try, you are addicted. All addictions work the same, just take on a different face.

I’m glad Steve took a stand on this one. I’ve wanted to do the same many times. Us guys think it’s in our own best interest to take in every gorgeous woman we see. But it really only hurts us. How can we ever get to know a real woman if we view beauty as skin deep.

In giving up my addiction to lust and porn, I’m finding my wife is the most beautiful woman I know. Something I could never see with my eyes constantly searching for skin. I’m no longer even interested in watching commercials like this any more, or movies with similar content. My attention is all for my amazing wife. We have an awesome God who knows what’s best for us. We just have to take the time to listen.

      1. Leet says:

Thank you Jeff B – for your testimony. It’s beautiful.

  18. deepthunk says:

Any fool can see that the city of Los Angeles is absolutely sick with corruption to its very core, Mayor Villaraigosa and his minions on the city council have allowed children to fall into the hands of pedophiles and proven time and again that the way of their city government is the way of corruption. The simple fact is when there are problems with corruption in government you need only look at the officials elected to run it to find the source.
How long will the people of Los Angeles put up with this gross mismanagement, gross misconduct, and disgustingly gross incompetence on the part of the mayor and city council? The list of their personal and professional failures, misdeeds, and suspicious activities goes on for miles, and yet still they sit in office where they can run the city into the ground. It simply astounds me.

  19. BIG JOHN says:

Wow so many people so negative , get a life there are so many things way more important than this. our country is falling apart & you are worried about what a pretty girl is doing with her food. you are kidding right.

    1. Suzie says:

Big John, this kind of thing making it to TV is one of the big reasons WHY our country is falling apart. We no longer have any values, morals, or respect for family.

    1. publius says:

Hey, LindaMay, if you don’t like the commercial, change the channel you old spinster. I think Kate Upton is gorgeous, and I hope she makes as much money as she can while she is still in demand.

      1. LindaMay says:

Just the exact kind of comment/response one would expect from an immature little boy who has his brain stuck in his pants. Do you even know what a ‘Spinster’ is? I’m married and have four beautiful son’s. You may want to start looking up the definition on your words before making yourself look like a idiot .. In which you just did.

This petition has nothing to do with her ‘Looks’ it’s all about the degradation that is happening right here in American, and all over the world for that matter.

You need to seriously grow up ‘Publius’. I will not be responding to any more of your childish comments. One day you may have children of your own, And then hopefully, you’ll understand why so many people (Men and Women) are outraged over this type of immoral indecency that is being shown at all hours of the day.

‘It is better to remain silent and thought a fool, then to speak up and remove all doubt”

        Good Day.

      2. Orange County says:

Hey pubic, you’re a jerk and a creep.

  22. Lisa says:

To LindaMay very well said hats off to you!!!!

    1. Lynn says:

I agree with you too Lisa –

      1. publius says:

One proverb deserves another: “Charity begins at home.” This means that before you, LindaMay, and the rest of your busybody friends on this blog try to fix the world of its immorality by signing your silly, misguided petition, maybe you should start with your own household. If I had four kids, as you purportedly do, the last place I would be is behind a keyboard debating the morality of a fast food commercial.

Besides, what were you doing when you were 19, ladies? I bet you weren’t traveling around the world, meeting famous people, and landing on the cover of Sports Illustrated. It’s been my experience that most women are uber envious and competitive with each other, and your petition is simply a thinly veiled attempt by insecure women to get Ms. Upton off the air. It has nothing to do with moral degradation, or whatever you called it.

The bottom line is that Ms. Upton will not have that body forever (as I’m sure LindaMay, Lisa, and Lynn would attest to), so I say let her live out her dreams while she still can. Go find some other cause to promote, and leave her and Carl’s Jr. alone.

      2. Orange County says:

Hey puslius, go have sex with your mother.

      3. Leet says:

Pubilus – THAT’s your bottom line ??? That Ms Upton better make money off her body while she can ?????

You really have set yourself up as the expert on other people here – their motives, and what they should do with their lives … Tell me – what are you doing with yours?

      4. beejay says:

Publius, your mind is in the gutter (and your conscience knows exactly what that means). Meditate on THIS proverb: “There is a way that seems right to a man (person), but in the end leads to death”. You obviously do not have children or you would understand the concern those posting here have to protect their children’s innocence — something those behind the Carl’s Jr ad want to destroy. A society without morals is a scary place to live.

  23. LindaMay says:

Another petition you may sign that’s against the sexually explicit commercial can be found at the link below.

    To ‘Publius’ Degradation:
The condition or process of degrading or being degraded. Abasement – Demotion – Reduction (As in the DECLINE of MORAL VALUES) It’s honestly hard for me to believe you can truly be this utterly asinine.

    1. TS says:

  24. Steven Cooper says:

For me, this petition is like chipping an ice cube off an iceberg. The sexually charged advertisements are everywhere. What about Condom ads, or Sex Lubricants, or Go-Daddy, They are all over the line during prime time. What we need is a petition to get the FCC to crack down on all advertisements of this nature.

    1. TS says:

what is needed is a petition to shut you christen hypocrites up,

      1. LindaMay says:

        Isn’t it past your bedtime?

      2. TS says:

lindamay, when you take your head off of this idiots lap you’ll wake up

      3. Leet says:

It is spelled Christian. And you are no judge or mindreader. You sound angry, but uninformed.

      4. TS says:

        I don’t care how it’s spelled hypocrisy is hypocrisy………………………

      5. Leet says:

Sure hypocrisy is hypocrisy – And who made you the judge?

    2. LindaMay says:

I totally agree about the FCC Steve, I will check in to that too. Thanks.

      1. publius says:

Good luck with your crusade, Mrs. Jellyby (aka LindaMay). When you rid the world of its immoral TV commercials, you can graduate to a bigger project like world peace or some other grand cause…

      2. TS says:

        like its been said,,,,

      3. TS says:

better do the same for mens Hans and Victoria Secret,,, OMG a sexy woman on TV, like I said christen hypocrites

  25. John says:

Hey Alexander Borodin aka publius. At least she has the guts to stand up against a bunch of perverted morons like you. And as for you ts, why don’t you get your head off of Brad Haleys lap maybe you’ll wake up!!!

  26. John says:

House of Holes – Alexander Borodin. Look it up publius.

    1. Publius says:

John’s profile: Caucasian male with repressed, Claude Frollo-like hatred of women; god-fearing Reagan-like conservative; mid-to-late 50’s (probably the latter); Well-fed face, Newt Gingrich like physique; Possible soccer dad, possible eunuch. Can’t figure out which.

I’ll wrap this little string up by saying Kate Upton is a beautiful young woman, and if she was my daughter I would be so proud of her for the things she has accomplished in such a short period of time. And if you don’t like the commercial she is in, don’t buy the product and change the channel. Really easy.

      1. Leet says:

It’s not about “liking” the commercial or not. It’s about the psychological impact of it on people who have issues with sex addiction. Yes the lady is good looking and has “accomplished” things in her young life, but that is not the issue. She is being degraded and is perpetuating the stereotypical objectification of female sexuality in general. That is not a good thing.

Also – you are making it very obvious in your statements that you have serious issues with respect – for yourself and others. You have set yourself up as a mind reader and discerner of the motives of people whom you don’t even know. You are not qualified to do that. I can understand that you don’t understand how gross and base this commercial is – and how degrading it is to Ms Upton. Ms Upton probably doesn’t understand the impact of the commercial either. But just because you don’t understand it doesn’t mean you have to slam people who DO understand it. They have the opinions they have precisely because they DO have a life, and they have learned that this life is not just about them, but about everyone whom God created. It is not simply a matter of switching the channel. Does that make the problem go away? And it certainly is not a matter of jealousy. Outward beauty is skin deep and fleeting – not something to be jealous of. Sex addiction and objectification of women’s sexuality however have had consequeces which are NOT fleeting and have caused social and personal problems for generation after generation. People who are aware of this want to change it. That is a good thing.

      2. JOHN says:

  27. TS says:

    1. Leet says:

TS – Are you trying to make a comparison or analogy between Danica Patrick’s image and this hamburger commercial? Please explain yourself. I’m not sure I understand you.

  28. Lynn says:

Thank you Leet – very well said

    1. Leet says:

    1. Leet says:

I already fight battles that do good. And unlike some people I am equipped to comment upon the topic of this blog. I am a CPS investigative social worker who has almost no resources to work with. But I do it everyday because I care. Everyday I see the consequences of a selfish and hedonistic society which does not respect god given life.

So TS – what are you doing about the California school system? And what is wrong with it? I don’t live in California. I live in Wash. DC.

  30. LindaMay says:

    Mr. Publius,

You can sit there and type all your assumptions, accusations, and all the characteristic flaws you assume I possess. You can do it to your hearts content, you can do it until your face goes from blue to purple, it absolutely makes no difference to me whatsoever, and honestly, it just makes you look more desperate.

You, Mr. Publius, who finds it necessary to hid behind some fictitious name know nothing of me, nor do you know anything of my wonderful, most precious family. You know nothing of my personal struggles, trials, nor my triumphs in my life. You know nothing of the charitable organizations, nor the volunteer work I’m involved with. You can rant and rave all you want, it fazes me not in the least.

Why is it, Mr. Publius you seem to think you have every right to spouse your beliefs and stance on this matter and anyone that goes against it is subject to harassment from you, honestly, what does that characteristic flaw say about you?

You really need to go back and re-read the posts here, how many are against showing this type of sexually explicit material on primetime television where children are being subjected to it. These little ones are our future, and unfortunately can not speak to the public on their own, so I will FOREVER stand up for them until the day they can stand up on their own and voice their own opinions!

I just emailed the following message to Carl’s Jr contact I hope that others will join me in the boycott.

“Please remove your offensive ad with the sexual overtone and issue a public apology for using it in a family-oriented business. For each day it continues to play, I will boycott your business for 1 month and encourage others to do the same. I find your ad very disrespctful as a woman and a mother.”

  35. William says:

I had to locate the commercial online to see what all of the fuss was about. I was expecting something different – this commercial just looks like typical white trash advertising to me. Perhaps that is the clientele the restaurant wants, but they won’t get a penny from me The young woman looks ridiculous, not alluring, but certainly trashy and classless. I am not familiar with this dive, but after watching the ad, I would certainly never eat there after seeing their attempt to corner the low-life market with that “heart-attack burger” they’re pushing.

  36. Susan says:

My family and I have boycotted Carl’s Jr. for years because of their disgusting advertising. There have been sexual overtones for years in their commercials. They’re just getting more blatant and brazen about it now.

I will never eat in a Carl’s Jr. restaurant or consume any of their products unless they do a 180.
