Police Shoot Carjacking Suspect In Pomona

UPDATE: 9:43 p.m. Sunday Police erroneously reported this suspect was dead. He is alive.

POMONA (CBS) — Police have reportedly shot a carjacking suspect in Pomona.

The shooting occurred at Alvarado Street and Park Avenue, according to authorities.

According to Amanda Burden, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, the unidentified suspect was taken to a hospital where he is in critical condition

The suspect reportedly first carjacked a SUV in West Covina. He then led police on a high-speed chase and then crashed into a man's yard in Pomona around 4 p.m. Sunday.

"I heard the screeching of the wheels," said Jaime Fausto, "and then he hit."

Fausto says the suspect fled the carjacked vehicle leaving his frightened 4-year-old behind. The little boy kept saying, "My dad, my dad. My dad's been shot," said Fausto.

Police said the suspect then carjacked another vehicle which he also ended up crashing. Police said the suspect fired at them, they in turn, fired one shot at him and bought him down.

No police were wounded in the exchange of gunfire.

Eyewitnesses told Burden the suspect was carrying a shotgun.

One witness, who didn't want to show his face, told Burden, "He jumped out of the car, and the cops were yelling at him at this point -- they had already  surrounded him. And he got out [of the car] and he put his hands like he was looking for a place to run, and he couldn't find a place to run. And I hear the cops go, 'Get down!'  and the next thing you know, I heard 'pow."

The suspect was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

The suspect's little boy was taken away by officers, according to Burden.
