SANTA ANA (CBS) — An 18-year-old mentally disturbed man is back behind bars on Thursday after he disappeared upon his release from the Orange County Jail.

On Monday, Jennifer issued a desperate plea for help in locating their missing son after was released from jail in Santa Ana on Feb. 17.

But it wasn't long before Matthew had his next run-in with the law.

"Unfortunately he came into our town and ended up here and because he didn't have any money, he commits these crimes to buy himself some narcotics," said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department.

Hoff was initially arrested on charges of possessing methamphetamine, but during processing he reportedly confessed committing another crime.

"He tells the officer that he in fact committed a robbery — using the specific penal code section — at a Subway earlier in the night," said Bertagna.

Jennifer reassured the public that her mentally ill son is safe, although she feared this is just the beginning of another cycle that never seems to end.
