1 Killed, 3 Wounded In Reported Gang Shooting Outside The Mayan Nightclub

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A gang member killed one of his rivals and wounded three others outside a downtown L.A. nightclub Saturday, police said.

Police were sent to The Mayan at 1038 S. Hill St. about 2:45 a.m. after being notified of a reported argument outside the club.

Witnesses told police both sides shouted gang names, and a gunman got out of a parked car and opened fire.

A man suffered a gunshot to the head and died, police said.

The shooting occurred near the club at Hill and Olympic.

Another man was shot in a leg, police reported, and two other people were transported to area hospitals with relatively minor wounds.

None of the victims wanted to talk to police about what happened.

"There were dozens of people around when this happened and we're sure someone knows who the shooter is," LAPD Lt. Paul Vernon said. "But, typically, few people come forward when gangs are involved -- but stepping up is the best way to reduce gang activity."

Some shells were recovered from the street, and investigators were checking area cameras to see if the incident was caught on tape, according to Vernon.

"In the age of video phones, we hope someone might come forward with video of the shooting or a description of the car the suspect left in," Vernon said.

The male suspect was described as Latino, about 5 feet 7 inches and 180 pounds, dressed in a black shirt and blue jeans. Police said he used a semiautomatic handgun.

Anyone with more information about the shooting was asked to call detectives at (213) 972-1249.
