Federal prosecutors say Gilbert Michel, 38, took $20,000 in cash in exchange for smuggling contraband to an inmate. The bribe was part of an FBI sting.

Michel agreed to plead guilty to the charge and will cooperate in an ongoing investigation, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Michel was assigned to the Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles. He resigned from the sheriff's department in September.

He faces up to 10 years in federal prison.

Michel is expected to make his first court appearance on Jan. 17.
