YORBA LINDA (CBS) — Orange County authorities are continuing to set up checkpoints in the hunt for a serial killer targeting homeless men.

A new checkpoint will be established Friday near the Yorba Linda library where 57year-old Paulus Cornelius Smit was stabbed to death on Dec. 30, officials said.

A task force, made up of Anaheim, Brea and Placentia police departments, the FBI and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, say the suspect targets transiets while they sleep.

It is believed that the suspect is also responsible for the murders of James McGillivary, 53, who was killed on Dec. 21 near a Placentia shopping center and 42-year-old Lloyd Middaugh who was found stabbed to death on Dec. 28 near the Santa Ana River Trail.

Friday’s checkpoint is the second one this week. The first was conducted Tuesday night in Placentia.

The only description of a possible murder suspect comes from a grainy surveillance video taken near the Placentia murder scene, KNX 1070’s Ron Killgore reports.

The suspect is described only as a male in a dark hooded sweatshirt.

Authorities also believe a white Toyota Corolla seen near the scene of the Placentia murder may also be linked to the suspect.

On Wednesday, the Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to the killer’s arrest.

Anyone with information should call the Anaheim Police Department at (714) 765-1944.

The check point has the following meanings:

    1. We, the police, are really doing our jobs. Please don’t cut our budget or lay offs.

    2. Hey, suspect, go somewhere else. Don’t stay near our cities.
