VATICAN CITY (AP) — The pope has accepted the early resignation of a Los Angeles bishop who recently acknowledged being the father of two teenagers.

Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop Gabino Zavala, 60, resigned Wednesday under the code of canon law that lets bishops step down earlier than the normal retirement age of 75 if they’re sick or for some other reason that makes them unfit for office.

In a letter to the faithful, Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez said Zavala had told him in December that he had two children who lived with their mother in a different state. Zavala subsequently submitted his resignation to the pope.

The archdiocese has offered spiritual and financial aid to help the children with college costs, Gomez said in the letter posted on the blog of the Catholic News Service of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Roman Catholic priests are required to be celibate, though Eastern rite priests can be married and married Anglican priests who convert can become Catholic priests. The celibacy requirement is often blamed for discouraging many men who would otherwise consider the priesthood.

Also Wednesday, Pope Benedict XVI named Monsignor Cirilio Flores to eventually take over the San Diego diocese when Bishop Robert Brom retires.

In 2007, Brom oversaw a $198.1 million settlement with 144 people who said they were sexually abused by priests, at the time the second-largest abuse settlement since the scandal broke out in the United States in 2002.

how many more failures do they need to have in catholicism? We are talking about the so called Leaders of the church not complying with its own guidelines or requirements. This is a complete failure and all the followers of this faith just look the other way. I am sure people in high places . somewhere in the Vatican have the same issues but will not resign because it would be to big to cover.

It says that “The archdiocese has offered spiritual and financial aid to help the children with college costs” So that’s where our donations are going when it should be used to help the poor. Zavala should be the one to pay for it. I’m stopping my weekly Sunday “offering”.

What bothers me even more is that his teenagers live in a different state, which tells me this bishop hasn’t been very involved in his kids’ lives. Sad.

Catholic church requires priests to be celibate.

    Priests counsel families on sex.

    Makes perfect sense.

I know Fr. Zavala, he officiated my wedding 25 years ago. I know him to be a good and kind man. I do not deny him the right to have love in his life or a family. Did he handle things in the best way? Probably not. But I am no one to judge him. I wish him and his family much love, happiness and well being.

I’ll judge him for you. Another religious hypocrite, not practicing what he preaches.

I am now officially disgusted of the Vatican and all archdiocese of the Catholic Faith in this Country and beyond. How do they justify pedophile priests and Adulterous Bishops? Well the condone it hide it and have it’s followers pay for it’s leaders sins! I have been a catholic since birth received first communion and confirmation but not married by the church only court and they say I cannot receive a host this ridiculous! I will now go and receive communion this Sunday. Oh by the way we should not be paying for Zavalas kids education or support that is sad for the Archdiocese would even consider that! I am now considering Jehovah’s witness as alternative at this point.
