Man In Critical Condition After Hit-And-Run Accident In Garden Grove

GARDEN GROVE (CBS) — A man was hospitalized in critical condition Thursday after suffering severe injuries when he was hit twice by two different cars in Orange County.

Gregory Martin, 54, was first hit by a gray Dodge Magnum around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday while crossing West Street in Garden Grove, authorities said. Martin was not using a crosswalk at the time of the accident.

The driver failed to stop and fled the scene. A witness followed the vehicle and got a license plate number, police said.

Shortly after the initial collision with the Dodge, Martin was hit again by a white Ford Explorer as he was lying in the street.

Martin was dragged 750 feet by the SUV before it stopped.

"The driver was unaware he had collided with a person until he stopped to investigate the sound of his vehicle dragging something," Garden Grove police said in a statement.

The driver of the Ford Explorer was later released by police.

Martin was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

After an investigation into the initial collision, police found the Dodge Magnum abandoned near Fairview Street and Trask Avenue in Santa Ana. The vehicle had significant damage, "which was indicative of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision," Garden Grove police said.

Authorities are searching for the suspect whose identity has not been released.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Investigator Jason Perkins at (714) 741-5823.
