Free Public Transportation For Christmas Eve And New Year's Eve

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Thursday announced free rides on the county's buses and trains on two of the year's worst nights for drinking and driving, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority will offer the free rides from 9 p.m-2 a.m. on each of the nights.

"There's never an excuse to drink and drive. So let the MTA do the driving on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve for free to avoid a senseless drunk driving tragedy," said Villaraigosa, who also chairs the board that oversees the transit authority.

The fares will be good for all Metro buses and trains, including the Red, Purple, Blue, Gold, Green and Orange lines. The free pass does not apply to Metrolink trains.
