The incident on Solano Avenue near Broadway occurred about 4:49 a.m. Saturday.

According to Matt Spence of the Los Angeles City Fire Department, a man armed with a semi-automatic handgun approached crews responding to a blaze.

Authorities report that the firefighters managed to flag down a sheriff's deputy in the area and quickly took cover.

"The deputy ordered the suspect to drop the firearm several times and the suspect pointed the firearm at the deputy and a deputy-involved shooting occurred," said Sheriff's Lt. Holly Francisco.

"When our firefighters are on scene, obviously their safety is paramount in this. They have to do an extremely dangerous job so their safety is paramount. They come across something that is way out of our scope, we need our counterparts to assist us, so they took whatever actions they needed," said Battalion Chief Greg Gibson.

Francisco says the suspect did not fire his weapon. He was taken to a hospital where he died.
