Boise St. To Name New Athletic Director; Will Need To Keep Petersen From UCLA

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Boise State University will name its new athletic director after jettisoning the former leader of its sports program as it was targeted for NCAA rules violations.

President Bob Kustra is due to name a new athletic director at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Kustra fired former athletic director Gene Bleymaier in August as part of self-imposed sanctions he hoped would have been enough to avoid probation.

But the NCAA placed Boise State on probation for three years and imposed other sanctions for major violations by the football program and other sports.

A new athletic director will have a series of challenges: Keeping successful football coach Chris Petersen from jumping ship for a larger program, raising millions for ambitious facility expansion plans and keeping BSU's nose clean with college sports' governing body.
