5 Freeway To Be Closed For Widening Project Through San Fernando Valley

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — As part of a $161 million highway widening project in the northwest San Fernando Valley, portions of the Golden State (5) Freeway in the area will be closed Monday night and the next three nights.

The closures will take place from midnight to 5 a.m. and will occur through Thursday.

The following closures are planned:

-- the northbound 5 connector to the northbound Antelope Valley (14) Freeway;

-- northbound 5 from Balboa Boulevard to the 14 Freeway; and

-- the westbound Foothill (210) Freeway connector to the northbound 5.

The project includes new carpool lanes at the interchange of the 5 and 14 freeways. The new elevated connector will allow drivers to transfer between freeways without exiting carpool lanes.

Caltrans officials said they hope the project will improve traffic flow and safety at the interchange.

Work on the project began in July 2008, with completion expected by the summer of 2013.
